Gem and Jo's Polish Picks - Breast Cancer Awareness Edition

Well, it's been a month since we've done one of these babies! This time we've painted our nails pink, in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is this month (if you couldn't tell from the overall pinkness of the blog)! If you want to know more about breast cancer and how to do self-checks, click on the pink ribbon at the bottom of this post!
Self checks are super important and are really quick and easy. The key to higher survival rates is early detection, so get checking girls (and boys!).
Jo's Pick:
So as it's breast cancer awareness month, pink polish was a must. I chose this beautiful Rimmel  London Salon Pro nail polish in the shade Simply Sizzling. This is a gorgeous cream cerise pink colour.

I have been super busy with college this past month (up to my chin in assignments, eek!), so I needed a polish that was quick drying so that I wouldn't have to wait ages for it to try before I dived back into the books. This polish really did the trick. It dried amazingly quick and it gives off a gorgeous shine. The polish doesn't chip easily at all either, I'm really hard on my nails (even really good polish hardly lasts a day on my nails), but this one didn't chip until day three of wearing it (which by my standards is amazing!). The application was really easy too and this made the process of painting my nails lightning fast.

I purchased my bottle from boots for about €5.50 which isn't half bad for the quality of the polish. You can find this in pretty much any drugstore that sells rimmel london cosmetics. They have tons of colours as well so there is loads to choose from for any occasion.
Check out from Boots here.
Check out on  Rimmel London's website here.

Gem's Pick:
This week I chose Primark's P.S. Love polish in a really pretty coral-pink! I don't have that many varnishes in pink but this one is definitely a favourite of mine, despite it's poor staying power. (Sad face).
The colour is really pretty and summery (I know, it's autumn. I'm just not ready yet.) and it goes great with everything!

To add a little something to my nails I painted my ring finger a sparkly pink (I used some drugstore polish that I can no longer find. Damn my blackhole of a bedroom.). In case you don't know, painting one finger a different colour is known as an "Accent Nail" and it is pretty popular among those ole instagrammers!

This polish really made me happy because in the last few days everyone has been talking about Autumnal shades and whatnot and I'm just here like "No. Not yet, please not yet!" But alas I cannot slow the coming winter and it is inevitable that this week I will have to break out my heavy jackets. But this polish made me happy and feel summery again. Therefore it shall remain the colour of my nails for as long as I can make it stay. Which is not very long.
You can find this polish in most Primark stores in Ireland and it was only €2.50 for a pack of 4 different colours. Yay for bargains.

Gem and Jo's College Knowledge

As you probably already know if you're a regular reader, both of us are currently college students! If you're just about to start college or are trying to decide on what course to take next year, then you should take a look at our other college posts Here and Here. Today we shall share what courses we are taking and why we love them so much!

Jo's Degree
I was never really totally sure of what I wanted to do as a career.  So I decided to go with a college course that opened up a lot of options for me and didn't limit me to having one career choice at the end. That course my friends was an arts degree. For those of you that don't know an arts degree is not a degree where I have to sit down all day and paint pictures (trust me if it was that I'd be failing with flying colours). Instead it's a course where you choose to study three subjects in 1st year, and then drop one of them for your final two years. I knew that I wanted to study music and English and then decided to go with something completely different and chose geography as my third subject.

Geography

I hadn't studied geography for my leaving cert and was a little worried that I might be behind other people, however this was not the case at all. Geography is one of those subjects in college that you can start from scratch with and not be miles behind everyone else. I really loved studying it in first year and we got study both the human geography side of things as well as the earth science parts (admittedly not my best part, way too many rock names)
Something that I really loved about geography was the fact that it was a really interactive subject. We weren't just sitting back and taking notes, we were really involved with the lectures and that made it easier to learn. We also got to do a lot of group work which was great as I got to meet a lot of new people.
Although I loved geography, I ended up dropping it as my other two subjects fit together much better.

Music

I've always loved music and knew it was something I wanted to do in college (I'm a bit of a music geek). For my degree we get to study all the different eras of music and get to listen to loads of different types, From crazy out electronic music to the more gentle classical music. This year I'm studying a history of rock and pop music which is probably my favourite module I've had so far.
In my degree we also get to do a lot of performance and everyone gets one on one tutoring for Their instrument. Then at the end each year we then have a grade like exam. Sounds scary but its actually a lot of fun and its a good break from the books.
We also have the choice to do composition which I did in my second year and quickly found out that I suck at composition. But you know, that might just be your thing!

English

People tend to be really frightened of studying English in university because of all the reading, but to be totally honest, English doesn't have a hell of a lot more than any other subject.
What I love about studying English is that you really get to explore a wide range of writings. From classics like Jane Eyre to teenage literature like the hunger games (yes we had seminars on the hunger games!). My favourite part has to be the dramas that we study. In first year we had the chance to study a brand new drama, Drumbelly. It was an awesome play about New York gangsters in the 1960s (not exactly Shakespeare, am I right?).
This year I'm doing a module on Hollywood cinema. For this module we have to sit around and watch movies like Singing in the rain and Psycho (not too shabby eh?).

Gem's Degree
Before going to college I had wanted to become a teacher, ever since I started first year of my undergraduate course I have changed my mind a hundred more times and between now and the end of this year, I'll probably change it again but one thing is constant. My absolute and utter love for geography.
Geography
I hadn't studied geography since I was 14 and doing my Junior Certificate in secondary school, I had chosen history instead. When I arrived at college, just after turning 18, I decided it was time for a change and I went with geography and I honestly don't know what I would be doing if I hadn't chosen it. I absolutely love it and it's not just a subject in my degree, it's my passion. So far I haven't done a module that I haven't liked, they are all interesting in their own way. However, I have had a few favourites.
I studied climatology in my second year and I would jump at the chance to do a whole degree in it. I loved that module and everything it was about. This year, my final year, I am doing Key Physical Geography skills and it's as if this module was made for me! We get to go on trips to do field analysis and then we get to work in the biology labs! It is seriously interesting and I am so excited to be able to do it!

Business
Photo: academyofworldbusiness.com
I have done business studies since I was 13 and I loved it all through secondary school, I aced every exam I was given. I even had my own business for a while, I made cute little greeting cards! So naturally I chose it in college. It is such an interesting subject and everything in the real world relates back to it! Also it'll be dead handy when I go looking for a job! I love the business side of blogging too! Networking and doing budgets is in my nature at this stage so with Jo's english degree and my business degree we should be here for a long while yet!
The only thing with business is, it kind of takes a back seat in relation to geography and I know I should concentrate on it more, but I just love geography so much!
My favourite modules in business? Human Resource Management and Marketing! I love the people side of things, I could not bear it if I ended up in a job where there was minimal human contact, I'm just a naturally social person!
Medieval and Celtic Studies
I chose medieval and Celtic studies for a subject in first year, and I dropped it when I continued into second year. However it was an incredibly interesting subject and I loved learning about Irish folklore and mythology, plus my lecturer was the cutest little woman who was so sweet! This was the perfect subject for first year, it was interesting and I really enjoyed the lectures. We also went on a field trip to Newgrange! If you don't know what Newgrange is, check it out Here, it is a crazy, super old, tomb which on the summer and winter solstice, the sun illuminates the inside! It's truly amazing and you should definitely go if you're in Ireland.
Here's my friend Rachel and I outside the tomb:

So there you have it, our college degrees. If you have any questions or if you guys would just like to say hey, be sure to leave us a comment, we really do love to hear from you!

Gem and Jo's Face of the Day

We are make up addicts and like to change up what we use all the time. We decided to show you guys what we wore on our faces today for a casual college look.

Gem's Makeup:

So for my casual mid-week look, I started off with my all time favourite foundation, Estée Lauder's Double Wear in the shade Shell (CO1) and I powdered using Makeup Rumours Pressed Powder in Nude. (This stuff is great and is only £1!!! Check it out Here).
For my cheeks I used Front Cover's blush and applied it on the apples of my cheeks for a little healthy glow!

For my eyes I used E.L.F. Cosmetics Eye Enhancing palette. I used 1 as an all over base colour. I used 2 in the crease of my eye and blended it out. I applied 3 on my lid and used 4 to highlight the inner corner of my eye as well as under the centre of my eye to make me seem more awake! (College is a killer)
Wet n Wild's H2O Eyeliner in jet black and Estée Lauder's Sumptuous Extreme Volumizing mascara finished off my eyes and a swipe of Estée Lauder's Pure Color Lip Gloss in Praline Paradise finished off my laid back, natural look.

Jo's Makeup:

For today's look I started off with Rimmel London's lasting finish 25 hour foundation. I then powdered with  Makeup Rumours Pressed Powder in Satin (pressed powder is a must for me!). For blush I used Sleek's Blush by 3 in sugar, using number 5 from the palette, for a bit of colour and then used Benefit's high beam on the tops of my cheek bones for a highlight.

For my eyes I used Catrice's eye shadow in the colour Bring Me Frosted Cake (Catrice have really cute names!) for an all over base and under brow highlight. Next I used Topshop's eye shadow in Harlow sunset, using number 1 on the center of my lids. I then used MUA bronze eye shadow (number 3) in my crease, and finally used the purple Topshop eye shadow (number 4) in the outer corner to add some dimension to my eyes. I finished off this eye look with a flick of Wet n Wild's Mega liner. I rounded off the look with  B. cosmetics sheer conditioning lipstick in Raspberry Jam.

Gem and Jo's Honeypie Minerals Review

We found this great company called Honeypie Minerals. These guys make great mineral products which are
paraben free, cruelty free (which is super awesome in our books) and environmentally friendly. They were kind enough to send us some samples of their products for us to try out and tell you guys what we think. So lets just jump in!
Honeypie Mineral Foundations- £11.99

The consistency of these foundations is really nice. We found that they were really buildable, up to creating an almost full cover look. They felt really light weight on the skin as well and would be great for anyone with very oily skin that finds it hard to deal with liquid foundations (girls we feel your pain!). These foundations would also be great for adding more coverage over your normal foundation (let's face it, sometimes we all need a little more coverage, darn you bad skin days!!!). Another great thing about these foundations is that they don't contain ingredients such as talc that can cause skin to break out.  We used Real Techniques buffing brush to apply this and it did the trick! Unfortunately these colours didn't really suit our skin tones but we will be the first to admit that we find it hard to find a colour in any foundation that matches us perfectly (Gemma is whiter than a ghost for one thing!).  However these foundations come in 15 different shades and they even have sample foundation packs for 49p so that you can try out a load of shades before choosing the right colour for you (an awesome idea or what?).

Eye Shadow in the colour Mushroom - £4.99
We were super excited to try the eyeshadows, if you don't already know we are serious eyeshadow collectors! This shadow in Grey is really gorgeous and is matte which means it is perfect for a casual, work appropriate smokey eye! It might not look like it in these pictures, but the little packets we received hold a serious amount of product and they are going to last us ages!
Eye Shadow in the colour Plum - £4.99
This eye shadow is really great. The pigmentation is fantastic and it doesn't crease on the eye. This is a matte shadow and doesn't contain any shimmer. We have been loving wearing this in the outer corner of the lid to deepen up our look and add a pinch of colour. The shadow itself is more a subtle brownie purple colour which we think would look great with any skin tone. It would be great for any winter look either in the crease, outer corner or all over the lid for a vampy nighttime look.

Blusher in the colour Peach - £5.99
This blusher is so pretty and summery! It really suited Gem's skin tone, whiter than white incase you've forgotten, and gave her a gorgeous healthy glow! We emptied the packet into an empty jar and used our Seventeen blusher brush to apply it over the apples of our cheeks!

Overall the Honeypie Mineral Makeup is pretty good! Aside from slight skin tone issues, the products we got were fantastic and for those prices, you really can't argue! The consistency and buildable nature of all the powders is prefect for natural, "no makeup" makeup looks and the eyeshadows are seriously amazing, our favourites by far! Plus the makeup is free from most of that nasty chemical stuff that's in a lot of other brands!
Thanks Honeypie Minerals for the makeup!
