Gem and Jo Review Girls On Film

This is about an eyeshadow palette just to clarify, the title of this post is....misleading.

Ah Makeup Revolution, we meet again you beautiful, beautiful brand. Oh how we love you!
If the sheer amount of blog posts about Makeup Revolution hasn't convinced you of our love of this makeup company then we don't know what will. We just cannot get over the quality of these palettes for such affordable prices. For instance, this Girls on Film palettes was just £4 from Superdrug. £4 pounds!! That's crazy cheap for such amazing products.

Girls on Film is a pink-y toned palette with colours that aren't dissimilar to one of Makeup Revolution's Iconic palettes. Kinda a dupe for the Naked 3 too. It comes with 12 shimmer shades and 6 mattes. A nice mix that can create some really pretty looks. And as with all of Makeup Revolution's palettes, the pigmentation (or colour payoff) is incredible. We do however, think that the fallout from the newer palettes is way more than some of our older palettes...conspiracy? Normal people think it's probably just new formulation of their shadows, but we love a good conspiracy. Why do you think we enjoy The Curse of Oak Island so much?
Tell us all your secrets Makeup Revolution!!

*clears throat* Time to get back on track with the review....

When we first swatched the matte shades (the circle ones at the front of the palette) we weren't too sure of the texture. They seemed kind of silicone like, almost waxy. But once we used them properly on our faces, where they're supposed to go, we were pleasantly surprised at how silky and smooth they went on.
We're pretty sure it helps the shadows to stay on longer too! Bonus!

As with most pink-toned palettes, they're perfect for everyday wear. They can create really natural, day time looks that can enhance features. Especially in people with blue eyes! You gots to make those puppies stand out!
With lovely shimmer and some darker shades this palettes can easily take you from day to night. Simply by adding a darker crease with just one colour, such as the matte black seen in the middle of the palette or the second-to-last brown shimmer, you can really make your eyes pop. And that will take you all through the night, whether you're working the tiles (aka dancing the night away) or milling into a giant tub of Ben and Jerry's. (We don't judge)

For £4 we really couldn't pass this palette up. It's perfect for Gem, who as you probably know has a bit of a problem with pink toned palettes (she's a makeup hoarder, send help!)

We're especially smitten with the champagne shimmer shades in this palette,
which are your favourites?

Gem and Jo Take On London

If you follow our Instagram account (@Gemandjotaketheworld) then it'll be no surprise as to where we've been for the last few days. We went to the wonderfully crazy, busy city of London, in the UK.
We did all the typical touristy things and of course we took lots of pictures, because what kind of tourists would we be if we didn't. If you wanna see us be tourists then just keep on scrolling...

Our first day in London was, of course, spent in the Natural History Museum. Jo got a tad excited about seeing the dinosaurs, as you can tell by the picture up above. The excitement on her face, ah bless!
Meanwhile Gem was a little excited by the display of rocks that were dotted around the museum. You guys probably know, but Gem graduated with a degree in geography. So this museum was perfect for her nerdy-ness. Look at her standing so proudly next to a stalagmite (the rocks formed inside caves.)

We also went to see the Victoria and Albert Museum which was filled with giant things! That entertained us immensely!
There's a picture of Jo with a gigantic painting below! It was frigging massive! And that room was filled with giant paintings, it was super impressive!
Even better was the room filled with giant castings of huge cathedrals and stuff and even a casting of the Statue of David.  We tried to take pictures to convey how absolutely humongous the castings were but it just didn't do them any justice.  If you live near London and haven't been to the V&A you need to go there just for the giant room!

Here's a picture of Gem that kind of shows the enormity of the giant things that were inside the buildings. This tower thing was so high it made us feel kind of sick just looking to the top of it.

If that wasn't enough for our first day, that evening we took on Piccadilly circus, Soho and four floors of the incredible M&M World. As you might have guessed, we were a bit tired by the end of the day.

The second day of our trip we took a stroll along South Bank just to take in the atmosphere. That is one seriously cool place, all the history that you can take in while walking along one path! And it provides a lovely skyline for a nice instagram post.
Plus we got some beautiful weather for this nice little stroll! It was gorgeous, the perfect day!

We walked all the way from the tube station at Big Ben, which is a lot bigger than we expected, all along South Bank to the Globe Theatre and then over Millennium Bridge (yes we were happy because a Harry Potter scene was filmed there) and then onto St. Paul's Cathedral. Which is also absolutely huge!

We absolutely loved seeing all this history, being touristy is one of our favourite things to do.

On our last day in the beautiful land of London, we started off by going to see Buckingham Palace. Lets face it, a trip to London wouldn't be complete without it. The place was amazing, and we saw the queen....well we saw a flashy car with police escorts that we have decided was the queen.

After witnessing royalty, we took a lovely walk in the beautiful weather London is famous for (rain, rain and more rain) down towards Trafalgar Square. We marveled at the famous lions and threw some money into the fountain before having some lunch and heading to the airport.

It was short but sweet this little trip of ours! Despite how tired we were when we got home, we loved how jam-packed our days were, it really gave off a feeling of excitement and adrenaline!
We had tons of stories to tell when we got home, from the room of giant things to Gem nearly stepping in a crime scene in one of the tube stations, it certainly wasn't uneventful and we couldn't have asked for more!

London, we hope to be back soon!

Have you ever been to London? Let us know in the comments!

Gem and Jo Take On Travelling

Guess who's going adventuring?

Well done, you probably guessed right (it wasn't a very tough question, but well done anyway). We are going to London!
We are so super excited, this will be our first overseas trip in ages and we're going to one of the best cities in the world. Who wouldn't be excited?!
To prepare ourselves for this wonderful adventure, we've looked at a couple of trip advisor websites and itinerary builders. Just so we can be super prepared when we get there and know exactly where we want to go.
One site that stood out was Tripomatic, which is an itinerary building website that also has an app, so you can download your plans onto your phone and know where and when everything is while on the go.
When you enter where you're planning your trip, Tripomatic automatically enters a list of places that are ideal for you to visit. So when we entered that we were visiting London, it put in all the great tourist attractions and split everything into different days, it even told us the walking distance between each attraction. How cool is that! It does all the hard work for you, all you have to do is get there and follow the map.

Another thing we've done is make sure to write down in a little notebook, the opening times, prices and closest tube stations to some of the places we want to go. That way if we have no internet access to look at our Tripomatic, we can still tell where we wanted to go and how we can get there. Just a little back up plan, you can never be too careful.

We'll make sure to take lots of pictures to show you guys!

Gem and Jo's Primer Picks

If you haven't tried a makeup primer stop what you are doing and get to your local drugstore. While primers have been around for donkeys years at this stage, hardly any of the high street makeup companies provided them. If you wanted long-lasting makeup, one of the only options was to fork out a few bob for a primer from the likes of Elizabeth Arden or YSL. Well those days a long gone, it seems like every drugstore brand has brought out numerous different primers, suited to a huge range of skin types.

Whether you're as shiny as an oil slick like us or you have dry patches, you are bound to find a primer to suit you. And best of all, you could probably find it in your local Boots store for an extremely reasonable price!

Rimmel's Fix and Perfect Pro: €8.99

This primer is a god send, it has a great price (is always on sale), actually does what it claims and helps your makeup stay on all day long. There are 5 things Rimmel claim this primer does: Smoothes, Restores, Brightens, Mattifies and Perfects. And let us tell you, it actually does all of these things, it instantly mattifies and smoothes your complexion and it creates a lovely glow that works alone or under makeup. We certainly love this one!
We pop this on under our makeup to help it last all day long! This is perfect for our fellow oily peoples!

Makeup Revolution's Ultra Face Base Primer: £5.00

If you haven't heard of Makeup Revolution, get out. We mean it. This is one of our favourite brands at the moment and we cannot stop raving about everything we buy from them! Including this primer. This is a more silicon like primer, which is great for blurring imperfections and smoothing over any lumps and bumps. However, if you are looking for a heavy duty primer, to hide everything and leave your makeup flawless all day, this is probably not the one for you. It's not as long lasting as the Rimmel Fix and Perfect but nonetheless is a gorgeous product that we enjoy using!
Again, we like to pop this on under our makeup to create a smooth, perfected base.
Find it here

Rimmel's Fix and Protect: €8.99

This is a new one for us, and to confess we're not totally sold on it, but for the purpose of this post (which is to give you guys a nice broad range of products) we shall include it. Rimmel just released this into their primer range and it's a welcome addition! Despite our love for the first primer mentioned in this post, the one thing it is lacking is an SPF. This primer fills in that gap. The Fix and Protect primer is basically a product designed to protect your face from everyday harm. Which includes pollution and harmful UV rays, and as a ginger Gem figured this would be perfect for her. As we all know she burns like that pizza your forgot about when your friend called with boy drama.
So with it's SPF 25 and an anti-pollution protection we were reeled in, hook, line and sinker.
However, the texture and staying power of this primer isn't the best. It goes on like a suncream, which wouldn't be too bad if it didn't have that suncream smell. It makes us think it's summer when it's not, sad times...
We've worn this one a couple of times under our makeup, but for extra staying power we added the Fix and Perfect primer to our T-zone.

So there you have it, a nice range of primers for affordable prices.
Let us know if you've tried any of these or if you have some primer recommendations!
Thanks for reading!

Gem and Jo Are Back

Well Hello there Stranger!

So after a long and well deserved break from the blogging world we are back and ready to jump right in!
For a while there we were pretty swamped with work. We're trying to figure out how we fit into the post-college world and it proved difficult for a while. There are a lot of responsibilities and expectations that no one told us about.
In the last 6 months or so, we've graduated, gotten full time jobs and have started Masters Degrees, along with trying our best to have some fun in what little spare time we have. And so blogging took a back seat, which is sad because we really love it! Hence the reason we're back!

So to ease us back into this bright, friendly world, we've filmed some new youtube videos. You can check 'em out here. Despite what you might think, our youtube videos are less work than a blog post. Taking the pictures, editing them and then trying to think of something witty and unique to say can be a little draining. Plus we all know that sometimes when you try too hard at something it can end up being horrendously difficult to finish it. But don't you worry your pretty little heads, we will have plenty of blog posts up soon enough!

For now, enjoy these pictures of us graduating with our Undergraduate Degrees!

This is our friend Patrick, and yes, we did pose like we were in Hogwarts. Wands and everything.

Until next time.
